Judith Supine

Judith Supine

BIOGRAPHY
Judith Supine is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Supine could not speak until a month after his seventeenth birthday. He could not physically articulate words, he could only squeak and grunt. Supine often drew pictures to communicate with his family. His mum saved all his pictures – just one of many reasons why his mum is so great. Judith Supine uses materials that are free or at least very cheap. He uses an X-Acto knife, glue sticks and cheap ugly paints. Judith Supine sources his magazines from people's bins, the public library, the dentist's, his little sister's magazine collection.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
I would walk across the Williamsburg Bridge every morning. I started fantasising about installing a Juste Un Clou sculpture at the top of one of the towers. I wanted to created magical little worlds.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
I made a floating sculpture of my dad wearing a bikini. I swam out into the East River at midday on a Sunday. My brother was holding a rope to pull me back to shore. He let go of the rope and the current swept me downstream.

CURTIS KULIG

Curtis Kulig

BIOGRAPHY
Artist Curtis Kulig lives and works in New York City. A decade ago, his private plea, imbued with futility and irony – 'Love Me' – became part of the urban fabric of the city. A loyal audience ensued, recasting the declaration with optimism. His studio practice consists of paintings and drawings often produced in series that explore his emotional vulnerabilities.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Cartier's Juste Un Clou was designed in the 70s in New York. It was an impulsive and wild era, a time when something ordinary could become extravagant – just ask anyone who was at Warhol’s Factory or Studio 54. So I wanted to choose words reflective of that time but that still resonated today and put this very emotional piece of jewellery at the centre of it, replacing each O. The letter O is so round, inclusive, it just lent itself perfectly to the thought. For me, it is more than words. It’s the motion of the script, the sweeping nature of it that I like.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
I create a lot of small films. While I was working on this project, I was pairing videos of construction sites with classical music. Maybe it was the nail shape that inspired me.

Molly Catherine Scannell

Molly Catherine Scannell

BIOGRAPHY
I like to sneak away and secretly observe the world as it whirls around me, with curiosity and a big smile. Everything I do is fuelled by passion and desire – my basic requirements.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
The process is easily my favourite part of my work. Browsing amazing mags, blogs, using Pinterest and making notes about my favourite things, things that just feel ‘right’. Collaborating with Cartier was incredibly thought provoking. The Juste Un Clou message was so fresh and honest to work with, it’s exactly the type of work I love to do: “What should be remembered about this unique bracelet is that Juste Un Clou is more than a product, it’s a spirit, something you desire, it’s a part of you.” How could I NOT get excited about this!

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
As with familiar strangers, removing ‘identity' from art offers an opportunity to tell a story on a larger scale or on a totally different level.

Andrew Westermann

Andrew Westermann

BIOGRAPHY
The Cologne based artist is also a former international model. During his time in the fashion industry, he learnt a lot about art and beauty. A combination of his unique journey, his fascination with death and his romantic view on life makes his pieces what they are. Simple yet elegant strokes, skulls, poems and contrasting colours are used to convey these views in his art.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
For me, Cartier stands for elegance, sophistication and exclusivity. The challenging but exciting part of the collaboration involves blending these ideals with mine. Not comparing, but complementing them. Complementing the beautiful object with an elegant stroke and the colour gold. Adding the dark and mysterious red synonymous with Cartier and my signature skeletons. In my romantic perception of the world, I think that we are no more than bones, love and tears in the end, which everyone has in common.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
If you don’t want to be forgotten for what you have done, then you have to leave more than just bones.

MELODI MEADOWS

Melodi Meadows

BIOGRAPHY
Raised outside Dallas, Texas, Melodi Meadows grew up on a farm with three older siblings. Her Mother Leslie, in true hippie fashion, homeschooled all four children, giving Melodi the time to nurture her imagination and allowing her to find her true love at a very young age: art. Melodi’s childhood formula for a perfect day included a disposable camera, drawing supplies and a reconfiguration of the clothing her mother bought her. At seventeen, Melodi enrolled in fashion school, exploring art through apparel. Although she loved fashion, she soon realised she did not want to design it. At nineteen, she started drawing and painting classes at the University of North Texas. It was a perfect match, and she spent the next four years on a creative high. With an infinite passion for creation, she delved into the deepest recesses of her psyche, exploring ideas and experimenting with a wide array of art forms and the complexity of human emotion that is born through them. During her last year in college, at age 22, she met up-and-coming photographer Asher Moss on his Miss Lonely book tour. She would say it was love at first sight. The following year they took a month-long road trip and moved to the West Coast. California was home. Asher, who was now an established photographer, became Melodi’s mentor in her new adventures in photography and creative direction. Today she works with large global brands as well as a range of local and national boutique-sized companies.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
When Cartier brought the Juste Un Clou collaboration to me, it felt like a perfect fit. Inspired by the 70s, a period that gave rise to so many influential artists, the bracelet embodies the state of mind I grew up calling my own. I turned to the artists of that era that had taken over my record cabinets, bookshelves and closets, since I was fourteen. I revisited their stories about a time when they felt truly free. Moments that almost sounded too good to be true, I would picture myself with them, using all my senses to fully understand the images or words I was taking in. Sometimes it almost felt like I was sitting on the couch next to Keith Richards, hearing him pick the notes to “Just my imagination” (running away with me). Once I was in the right Juste Un Clou frame of mind, I began drawing and creating a collage with images that inspired that mood in me. What came out of it was the sultry and edgy visual story of a wild and free-spirited individual with nothing but true freedom in mind.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
Finding the right talent is always an essential piece of the puzzle. In the fashion industry, I'm surrounded by many talented individuals, but I was looking for someone who never apologised for being who they were. I remembered a young lady I worked with in New York City: Kaiman Kazazian. The way she drank from her wine glass and whipped her long black hair to look over her shoulder said it all. She owned whatever room she entered, and I knew she would be perfect for this project.

Chen Bingdai

Chen Bingdai

BIOGRAPHY
Chen Bingdai is a freelance photographer based in Hangzhou, China. He studied industrial design at college, but developed a passion for photography instead.
The simplicity and minimalist composition of his works are predominantly inspired by traditional Chinese painting.
He mainly photographs his friends and the city where he lives, drawing much inspiration from the people around him.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
The Juste Un Clou series gives me freedom. It presents no boundaries. It’s very conceptual, yet down to earth.
I plan to conduct the shoot in a simplistic and conceptual way. Hands and Juste un Clou products will be tastefully curated in one frame, while leaving plenty of room for the audience to imagine the story behind the scenes – whether the hands/objects are interacting with nature (light and shadow, plants) or humans (themselves or other people). Through this process, I hope to convey Juste Un Clou’s free-minded spirit, that things are always open to interpretation.
In aesthetic terms, the photos will look undersaturated and underexposed to add a layer of different tones/a moody feel. I also plan to use a lot of negative space to complement the naturally positioned/posed objects and draw the audience’s attention to the product and the overall experimental, edgy vibe.

Xiao Han

Xiao Han

BIOGRAPHY
I’m Xiao Han, a politics teacher and part-time photographer, born and raised in Shanghai. I think I fulfil these two different roles effortlessly and with ease. It is my experience as a politics teacher that allows me to create quality visual work. My style is simplistic, but high impact, which has allowed me to gain over 62,000 followers on Instagram.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Juste Un Clou is more than just a simple product. To me, it is a means of storytelling. I want to use four pictures to represent “Juste Un Clou”, the themes being: Keep Moving, Be Wild, No More Hiding and Be Loved. I want to collaborate with Cartier to convey positive energy for Juste Un Clou.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
When creating this work, Shanghai’s unpredictable weather proved a challenge – there were only two sunny days this whole month. When I wake up in the morning, I pull open my blinds and if the sun is shining, I go out to shoot. I rely on the weather to create my work, which can sometimes make me feel helpless, but at least I can adjust accordingly.

CHO GI SEOK

Cho Gi Seok

BIOGRAPHY
Cho Gi Seok was born in 1992 and is based in Seoul, South Korea.
His work mixes different genres, such as photography, graphic design and objects.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Juste un Clou is groundbreaking in that it is an ordinary object transformed into a precious piece of jewellery. In addition, it brings the beginning and the end together at a common point, by curving the straight line of a nail which would usually never come full circle. My work evolved around this same concept – the idea of things that usually would never meet, like the beginning and the end.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
I was fortunate enough to be able to exhibit my work at the Panthère de Cartier pre-launch event in Seoul. It was great timing and a great crowd!
